Original Wooden Puzzle Boxes

These unique handcrafted puzzle boxes are completely original creations invented and made exclusively by artisan Randal Gatewood. These designs are unlike any other secret puzzle boxes you will find anywhere.

The first of each of Randal’s new designs are specially made in Limited Edition versions. Each of these unique puzzle box designs incorporates an artistic gesture; sculptured of fine hardwoods that are selected for specific texture and palette to accentuate the theme of his boxes. These handmade boxes are real "working art"! Many of his designs actually incorporate the mechanical aspects of the box as part of the decoration adding greater depth to the boxes. You will find that these complex boxes are intended to be as challenging to open as they are beautiful to look at.

Randal’s Limited Edition puzzle boxes are almost always made completely of select exotic hardwoods. He says that the puzzle boxes that are constructed completely of wood only are called, "woodborne". This simply means that there are absolutely no screws, nails or even metal hardware used. It is his close attention to details and a love of the craft that really makes each of these wooden puzzle box designs very unique working art.

Designated a "world famous puzzle box designer" by his own peers; he has even been referred to as a Master puzzle box builder. His puzzle boxes have been sold to collectors all around the world. The Ultimate Personal Box is a real combination box / trick locking box. You could probably even call it a trick opening box since there is a tick to opening it. This box not only has a combination to open it but, even better, you can personalize it to your own combination setting. That's why this beautifully handcrafted box is called the Ultimate Personal Box. It might just be the greatest keepsakes box keeping its contents secure and no one will know you're combination! There's a total of 1331 possible combination settings to challenge even the best puzzler. These boxes have very detailed engravings and intricate hardwood inlays.

The Box of ZN  (pronounce: Box of Zen) is another handmade work of art right down to its exotic hardwoods, warm colors and its many fine details. This puzzle box is 100% woodborne construction. It is built of Keruing and Bubinga of which are both very stable woods adding longevity and stability. Even the inlay is of solid hardwood Bubinga. These two woods accent one another beautifully, creating a warm tone and balance that adds to the theme of its design. The weight of this box is representative of its' solid construction. The lid uses a "double track" to insure a strong smooth movement incorporating 27 moves to open.

The Keepers Key Safe is a tricky box made from solid hardwood Mahogany, implementing a decorative box joint design. When you slide the lid open, you are met with a solid hardwood 'panel' that is blocking access to the inside of the box. Located inside the box is a wooden key and the trick is to get the key out of the box. This box requires 7 moves before you can retrieve the key from the box. It is a moderately difficult puzzle to solve, requiring a strange sequence of moves that are indeterminable by most who try this puzzle box. Once you figure out how to get the panel out of the box, you get the key. You may find it just as fun trying to get the panel back in the box as it was getting it out!

The Double Crossed  is the Original Quagmire Puzzle Box design. This beautiful wooden puzzle box is as much a dexterity puzzle as it is a mechanical puzzle. The Double Crossed is made from quarter sawn Argentine walnut, Palo Blanco, and cedar. This box and all its mechanisms are entirely made of wood. No metal was used at all. Even the many hidden "springs" and double action hinge incorporated in this design are made of wood. Although the visible puzzle pieces on the lid look balanced, no two pieces are the same. 23 moves of the cross pieces may not sound to hard but with its numerous wooden springs and odd procedure, it is a very difficult puzzle to solve requiring a physically challenging triple simultaneous move. It really takes some dexterity to open it. If you tackle opening this box, you will certainly see why it is called "Double Crossed"!
