A NOTE FROM THE DESIGNER:
The Keepers Key Safe Deluxe Puzzle Box is made from
an
exotic hardwood called Makore, also known as Baku; it is
an African cherry with quite beautiful grains
and coloring. This box is really a completely new
design. I
implemented a decorative custom box joinery of my own
design and therefore it is certainly not one ever used
before. I also took the time to grain matched the box sides. This means
the box sides are cut in sequence from the same piece
of wood. The result is that the grain matches
going around
the box. An additional effort was made to select a good
grain and color match for the bottom and top of each box
too. This box is
completely
made of hardwood. No metal was used in its
construction making it a true woodborne puzzle box
design. It is made to fine woodworking standards
and was finished with multiple coats of clear high
sol lacquer
and has been hand rubbed to a smooth satin finish.
As each box is truly individually handcrafted, each one
has its own unique characteristics. See the
pictures below for even more features.
This new design has
2 solid Makore panels inside that are "locked in" by a series of hidden
friction pins and slots.
It requires 30 (plus) moves to remove the
panels and to retrieve the keys from inside the box. I
have it posted as 30 (plus) moves because though some
steps require for multiple raps or repetitive positions
to be executed in one step, I did not try to actually
add how many raps it would take in one step or how many
times it would need to be "rocked" in another step. But
what you can count on is that there is much more
involved than just a succession of 30 moves and you're
in. You really have to interact with the box to make it
happen.
As you are finding out, there
is indeed a lot more than meets the eye with this most
unassuming puzzle box. When you slide the
lid open you are met by the first of the two solid
hardwood panels and this is where the challenge begins!
The entire box makes up it's puzzlistic value. You must accurately position
the box and rotated
it through a process of moves that includes rapping on it in
specific positions to manipulate the "locking" pins. Each
panel requires it own procedure for removal. This puzzle box was designed
with the intent to be very difficult and challenging. Since the internal parts are not visible
during operation, there are few clues to go by. Though you may possibly
be able to hear the pins moving while positioning the box, the sound of the wooden keys and the rattling of
the panels inside the box will indeed add to the difficultly. Even its size is intended to add a bit of awkwardness with the handling and positioning of the box. All of these characteristics combined are what make this box
a real Quagmire Puzzle Box.
The Limited Edition Keepers Key Safe comes with 5 pages of fully
illustrated instructions which includes a procedure for
removing the panels, a procedure for reinstalling the
panels back to the "locked" position and even another procedure to
resolve a possible "gotcha" that was implemented into
the design (without giving away too much). It also comes
with a hand signed Certificate of Authenticity
displaying the QPB certified embossed seal. The
signature Quagmire Puzzle Boxes logo and the serial
number are permanently engraved into the bottom of the
box.

The lid track and corresponding bead were routed
using an antique set of mated bits. Though they left
a little burnished effect, the lid tracks the lids
work great.
